A SELJUK SILVER AND COPPER INLAID BRONZE DISH, KHURASAN PERSIA, 12TH - 13TH CENTURY
Features decorative metal inlay work where designs were incised into the base metal and filled with silver and a reddish copper metal. The dark background is the result of deliberate patination, The circular form is centered with an interlaced six-pointed star medallion. The bands of the star are inlaid with copper, while the center features an eight-petaled silver flower. Triangular and hexagonal compartments within the star are filled with silver-inlaid circular and floral motifs. A wide band of decoration surrounds the central medallion, consisting of a ring of almond-shaped or teardrop motifs, many retaining silver inlay.
