A PERSIAN TURQUOISE INSET AND ENAMELLED SILVER LIDDED CHALICE, PROBABLY FOR THE CHRISTIAN IN ISFAHAN, 19TH CENTURY

This silver covered chalice features a tapering beaker-shaped cup set upon a tall conical base. The piece includes a matching conical lid topped with a faceted green gemstone finial set in a decorative silver mount. The interior of the cup is finished with a gold-wash or vermeil coating. Decorative elements include four applied sunburst-motif plaques on the base, each centered with a teardrop-shaped turquoise cabochon. A circular ring of small turquoise cabochons encircles the central knop of the stem. The chalice rests on three faceted dark-colored stone feet. Stamped decorative borders featuring repeating leaf or heart motifs are present around the rim of the lid and the bottom of the base.
