A DAMASCUS POTTERY TILE WITH SAZ LEAF DESIGN, OTTOMAN SYRIA, 16TH - 17TH CENTURY
The design is executed in the saz style, characterized by large, sweeping, serrated leaves in cobalt blue and turquoise pigments. These primary motifs are accented with white scrolls and interspersed with smaller blossoms and floral sprays, all defined by black outlines against a bright white slip ground. The reverse of the tile is porous and retains remnants of white mortar and plaster from its original architectural setting, along with a dark rectangular outline from previous mounting.
