SEALED & DATED 1708 ENGLISH ONION WINE BOTTLE. 6.3ins. A truly outstanding, very early, sealed & dated classic English onion bottle. So called black glass but actually mid green, very dark where glass is thick. Pronounced, round tooled edge, string rim - chip to left/ rear. Very large applied, below shoulder crisply struck seal: W: de Liste/ 1708. The de Lisle family were from France, with the Normans, the most prominent branches were landowners & titled Catholics. Garendon Hall was a major estate in Leicestershire with another branch on the Isle of White. The seal date unusually surrounded with ornate line border. A few minor general age wear marks, several neck striations & air bubbles. Quite crude overall. Deep kick up with underside rough pontil. Unrecorded in David Burton reference books. A wonderful example of its type.
