£3,000
EARLY 1784 DATED LONDON ALE BOTTLE. 8.2ins tall. Bulbous bodied form in delightful variating salt glaze. Chunky rounded lip finish with sgrafitto lines below, handle to rear. Very boldly impressed in large letters to shoulder G Quint/ 1784. Illustrated in colour p132 Askey. Possibly Vauxhall Pottery (see p51 Brown Stoneware, Hildyard & Hughes). Provenance has been a tough hunt - a George Quint, born in Chevening, Kent, 1761 was buried at All Hallows, in the city of London in 1838. The name Quint is also associated with Modbury Devon. Some rear hairlines toward base (stable) in no way detract. Undoubtedly a significant & important offering, anything actually dated pre 1800 is exceptionally rare.
