An Indian Jain Lokapurusha Cosmological Painting, 18th/19th Century - An Indian Jain Lokapurusha cosmological painting, executed with pigments on cotton. This large, rectangular textile depicts a central green-skinned crowned deity, identified as Lokapurusha, whose torso is intricately segmented into numerous small compartments, each containing a miniature painted figure or scene representing aspects of the Jain cosmos. Flanking this central figure are two prominent circular mandalas, filled with concentric rings of figures, animals, structures, and visible but illegible Brahmic script. The main composition is bordered by a frieze of white animals, possibly cattle, set against a blue ground, and an outer plain brown fabric border. The artwork features a rich, somewhat muted palette of earth tones, reds, blues, greens, and yellows, consistent with traditional South Asian folk art styles.

Approximately 162 x 112cm
