A THREE CLASP CRIMEA WAR PAIR TO A 1ST DRAGOON GUARDS CHARGER WITH THE HEAVY BRIGADE. A pair comprising Crimean War medal 1854-55 with Balaklava, Inkermann and Sebastopol claps and decorative top suspension named to H. Williams 1st Rl Dragoons. The top suspension engraved T B Bailey Coventry Regd Oct 101856 No 3888. And a Turkish Crimea medal, Crimea 1855 (British Issue), unnamed as issued, n unusual 'X' form suspension. Henry Williams was born in Mellis in Suffolk, he attested for the 1st Royal Dragoons on the 2nd April 1831 at the age of 19. He found himself in the defaulters book on a number of occasions, he was tried and imprisoned on the 19th June 1841 for 10 days, absent on the 15th August 1841 he was sentenced to six months imprisonment, and forfeiting good conduct pay pm the 3rd August 1848. The 1st Royal Dragoons were the first British Regiment to deploy and Wilson was part of the famous Charge of the Heavy Brigade at Balaklava, an action which resulted in two fatalities and eleven casualties for the Royals. The Charge saw a force of 800 Cavalry, with the 1st Royal Dragoons amongst them, routed a force of 3000 Russian Light Cavalry men in a frenetic engagement that lasted fewer than ten minutes. Williams was discharged following the action in Crimea as unfit for further service on the 26th October 1857. With extensive copied roll extracts confirming these clasps and service papers numbered 15080. Provenance: Part of The Collection of Medals formed by the late John Hilliard (1921- 2005). Noonans 31st March 2010 when sold as a single campaign medal without the Turkish award.
