A BALTIC MEDAL 1854-55 TO H.M.S. DUKE OF WELLINGTON AND A SURVIVOR OF THE DISASTER ABOARD H.M.S BOMBAY IN 1864. A Baltic Medal named to James Keating Admiral's Coxswain H.M.S. Duke of Wellington. James Keating was born in Dublin in 1825, he enlisted in 1846. During the Baltic campaign he served aboard H.M.S Neptune and Duke of Wellington, Admiral's Coxswain from 1864. Keating served Admiral Sir Charles G J B Elliot, most notably aboard H.M.S. Bombay which was destroyed during firing practice on the River Plate in 1864. An accident of unknown origin caused a catastrophic fire aboard the ship which led to the loss of 93 of the crew as well as the ship. The roll records a replacement issue for this award and it seems probable that the original medal was lost during the fire and a replacement issued with the rank as shown. Keating followed Admiral Elliot to H.M.S. Triton until June 1865, retiring in 1866. As an Admiral's Coxswain Keating will have have probably been a senior rating responsible for the Admiral's barge and crew of the barge. With copied research.
