A QAJAR POLYCHROME GLAZED CERAMIC TILE, PERSIA, 19TH CENTURY
This square ceramic Qajar tile features a traditional gul-o-bulbul or bird and flower motif. The underglaze painted decoration depicts a turquoise bird perched amidst blooming pink roses and assorted foliate elements. The color palette is characteristic of 19th century Persian ceramics, utilizing cobalt blue, turquoise, manganese pink, yellow, and green with black outlines set against an off-white ground. The earthenware body is visible at the edges. The reverse is covered in thick remnants of original white lime mortar from its previous architectural installation and is currently fitted with a modern wire-wrapped hanger for display.
