A QAJAR CUERDA SECA POTTERY TILE, PERSIA, 19TH CENTURY
This square earthenware tile is decorated in polychrome glazes featuring a fragmentary figurative scene set against a deep cobalt blue ground. The composition depicts the lower portions of two figures; the figure on the left wears a vibrant turquoise-blue robe with a dark cuff, while the figure on the right is dressed in a tan garment cinched with a dark blue sash. To the far left is a vertical decorative border containing five-petaled blue flowers and black foliate motifs on a light blue ground, separated from the main scene by a thin yellow vertical band. The reverse of the tile is composed of buff-colored earthenware with a recessed central square and a border of parallel incised lines designed to aid mortar adhesion.
