AN INDIAN GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL WITH PERAK CLASP TO AN OFFICER ABOARD H.M.S. CHARYBDIS. An Indian General Service Medal with Perak clasp named to J. Boxell Engr H.M.S. 'Charybdis'. One of 257 medals with the clasp to the Charybdis. John Boxell was born at Preston in Lancashire in 1833. He enlisted with the Royal Navy as an Assistant Engineer 3rd Class in 1856 rising to Engineer (lieutenant) in 1864. He joined Charybdis in January 1874 seeing action up the Lingie and Lakut rivers with Boxall acting as Chief Engineers for ,much of the trip as his superior suffered 'Delirium tremens' no doubt as a result of Malaria. Appointed Chief Engineer (Commander) in May 1877. From December 26th 1878 he was placed on the retired list on medical grounds. He died in 1919. With copied research.
