AN OTTOMAN MIQUELET-LOCK TUFEK RIFLE, TURKEY, 18TH - 19TH CENTURY
This Ottoman miquelet-lock rifle, or tufek, features a faceted pentagonal buttstock and dates to the late 18th or early 19th century. The dark hardwood stock is decorated with pierced brass plaques and brass pin-work. Wire inlay is applied in borders and geometric patterns along the stock and forend. The octagonal steel barrel is secured by three wide brass bands and features white metal foliate inlays at the breech. A line of brass rosettes is inset along the side of the barrel. The ignition system is a steel miquelet flintlock paired with a ball-headed trigger. A rectangular cartouche with incised Ottoman Turkish script is present on the top barrel flat. The rifle includes a bead front sight and a raised rear peep sight.
