A SOUTH INDIAN DECCANI BRONZE BOAT LAMP, 17TH - 18TH CENTURY

This cast bronze oil lamp, originating from the Deccani or Kerala region of South India, dates to the 17th or 18th century and is sourced from a private French collection. The lamp features a horizontal gallery containing five circular oil reservoirs, each with a distinct pouring lip. This gallery is supported by a series of stylized columns that rest upon a boat-shaped lower body. The ends of the gallery are embellished with zoomorphic terminals depicting mythical creatures with foliate tails. The central tapered shaft is flanked by two openwork scrollwork panels featuring pierced circular motifs and centered by embossed sunburst or rosette designs. A horizontal band of incised geometric zigzag decoration is present along the lower edge of the reservoir gallery. The lamp iS mounted on a modern rectangular display stand via a square-profile pin inserted into the base of the central shaft.
