A BRONZE PEACOCK KUMKUM TIKKA SPIRITUAL BOX, DECCAN INDIA, 17TH CENTURY
This bronze ritual container, identified as a 17th-century Deccan spiritual box, is a traditional vessel used for holding kumkum or tikka powder. The object features a central teardrop-shaped vessel with a hinged, peaked lid. The lid is surmounted by a stylized peacock finial. A prominent rear assembly consists of a pedestal-mounted large peacock with a fanned tail, flanked by smaller avian figures. The front of the base includes a stepped platform supporting two additional peacock figures. The iconography centers on the mayura or peacock, a significant motif in South Asian spiritual art. The casting displays stylized crests, scrolling plumage, and traditional avian forms characteristic of the Deccan region. The construction is modular, with the various figural components joined to a flat, teardrop-shaped base.
