Note: Harry Norrington, 6294277, was gazetted in the London Gazette 29th March 1945 for receiving the Military Medal. He was a local Kent man from Faversham, and was in the Buff Regiment 101st Royal Armoured Corps, the regiment of 'Crocodiles', the 'Crocodile' being a Churchill tank converted as a flame thrower. This was particularly hazardous and very few survived. The Royal Armoured Corps Regiment was formed in 1941 by the conversion of the 7th Battalion Royal East Regiment which raised itself in 1940. In 1941 the Regiment was assigned to the 31st Tank Brigade and equipped with the Churchill Crocodile flame throwing tank. They were attached to the 79th Armoured Division. The Regiment at time had 45 Crocodiles. They largely took part in the Normandy landings and more significantly in the Battle for Brest. Sgt Norrington was part of the Battle for Brest and in this particular action went forward to assist the three tank commanders in extracting their tanks from the battlefield. He managed to get one tank back on its tracks, he ran over to a second tank to discuss a plan of action. In total he assisted in the rescue of three sets of crew for which he was awarded the Military Medal. He survived World War II, living the rest of his life in Faversham, and this medal group and ephemera has been consigned directly from his family
