(Architecture) John Weale (ed) Quarterly Papers on Architecture Volumes I to IV, original publishers' boards a little stained and chipped, paper label laid to spine, profuse with tissue guarded plates, including colour lithographs, internally excellent, published by John Weale, London, 1844 and 45. (4) Quarterly Papers on Architecture, edited and published by John Weale, was issued in London between 1844 and 1845 as a serial architectural periodical, later collected into four quarto volumes. It covers topics such as the Gothic Revival, ecclesiastical decoration, and stained glass. The first four volumes—effectively constituting the complete run—demonstrate Weale's hybrid publishing model, whereby quarterly parts were gathered into substantial bound volumes rich in visual material, including over 100 coloured plates alongside numerous additional tinted illustrations. This format reflects mid-nineteenth-century advances in architectural illustration and print culture. (Ames, W. & Higby, L. 2014)
