EDWINA SANDYS (BRITISH B. 1938) At Breakfast, Ink and watercolour, 78 x 108cm Signed with initials
Edwina Sandys is the granddaughter of Sir Winston Churchill (1874-1965). Inspired by her grandfather's artistic talent from a young age Sandys explored both painting and sculpture, perhaps most notably scandalising the World with 'Christa' in 1975, a bronze sculpture of the crucified Christ, reimagined as a woman. She also completed a very ambitious commission for the United Nations for the Year of the Child (1979/1980) consisting of three large marble sculptures which are located outside the UN Headquarters of New York, Geneva and Vienna. She lives and works in New York where she relocated during her marriage to US architect Richard D. Kaplan (1933-2016)
