1974 Norton Commando 850, 828cc. Registration number PCE 67M. Frame number 314170. Engine number 314170.
Sold with the V5C, V5, old MOT's, keys and copies of the service manuals.
The 850 Commando was the last new machine from medium-sized Norton Villiers before the firm endeavoured – ostensibly with British Government assistance – to assume control of the bankrupt BSA Triumph Group, which, with two large equally outdated factories, was an altogether bigger enterprise. The original 750 Roadster, with options for 7 colours of fiberglass fuel tank, hit the market in 1970, proving an instant success in USA and elsewhere. Steel fuel tanks and front discs were added for the 1972 season and, given its momentum, there was little reason but to continue the Roadster, unchanged, but from 1973 fitted with the sturdier 850-motor. The 850 Commando's engine was designed for strong mid-range torque and reliability, a departure from the higher-revving 750 ‘Combat’ engine. The Commando is famous for its Isolastic frame, which uses rubber mounts to isolate the engine / gearbox assembly from the main frame, significantly reducing vibration.
PCE was owned by second owner, Roger Bartlett in 1991, quickly selling it to Melvin Poel a day later. He kept it until 1994 when he sold it to our vendor for £3,300 with a genuine 2,982 on the odometer.
It has continuous MOT history from 1991 until 2017 when it was recorded at 35,000 miles. Our deceased vendor has changed the clocks to electronic versions, added Smart-Fire Pazon Ignition and spot lamps. It has been stored for several years due to ill health and will require some recommissioning.
