GUSTAV ADOLF BREDOW (German 1875-1950) An inlaid trinket box of maple with specimen wood samples inlaid in geometric patterns, stamped to base 'Prof Bredow, Douglas 1916, ausgeführt von Jul. Trümper'
Camp Douglas was a first world war prisoner of war camp on the Isle of Wight, it held 2,700 prisoners and was the smaller of the two prisons located there. It was a camp reserved for those who could afford to pay for luxuries and extra privelages. Arts and crafts were central to many priosner of war camps and it would appear that Camp Douglas was no exception. Professor Bredow was a German sculptor and one of his boxes was selected by Colonel Madoc, Commander of Camp Douglas for the duration of the war, to Queen Mary as he had heard that the Queen was interested in such objects. An example of his POW work boxes now resides in The Royal Collection (RCIN 69485)
