A GROUP OF THREE PORTRAIT MINIATURES, THE BLANDIN FAMILY, EARLY 19TH CENTURY, FRENCH SCHOOL
Comprising three oval portrait miniatures, each painted with fine attention to likeness and costume, and individually mounted in gilt frames, the three together presented on a crimson velvet-backed plaque.
• Upper miniature: depicting a young female sitter shown bust-length, wearing a high-waisted dress of warm ochre tone with a white chemise front and a finely pleated ruff collar. Her hair is dressed high and encircled by a narrow jewelled band, consistent with early Empire fashion. The treatment of the face is delicate and idealised, with softly modelled flesh tones and restrained expression.
• Lower left miniature: depicting a young male sitter wearing a dark uniform coat with standing collar and decorative collar embroidery. The coat is fastened with a vertical row of buttons, and the sitter is shown without epaulettes or visible orders. The presentation suggests civil or junior military dress.
• Lower right miniature: depicting a young male sitter in formal uniform with a prominent gold epaulette to the shoulder and a decorative medal or order suspended from a ribbon at the breast. The uniform is rendered with careful attention to detail, and the insignia is continental in character.
The three miniatures are stylistically cohesive and clearly conceived as a familial grouping, likely commissioned together.
Provenance: Château de Chalain.
