Oil on a small support, possibly ivory

A finely painted portrait miniature depicting a lady shown in three-quarter view, wearing an elaborate costume with a high lace ruff, layered jewellery and an intricately dressed coiffure. The sitter’s refined features are rendered with careful modulation of tone, and the delicate handling of the lace and adornment reflects the high technical standard associated with early 17th-century miniature painting.

Housed in a later turned wooden frame.

Provenance: Château de Chalain.
