A SAFAVID TINNED COPPER GLOBULAR BOWL, 17TH CENTURY. -
A large tinned copper vessel of traditional Persian form, attributed to the Safavid period. The vessel features a globular body tapering to a flat base, a wide constricted neck, and a flared rim. The exterior surface is decorated throughout with intricate engraving and chasing. A wide horizontal band of cursive calligraphy encircles the neck, set against a background of scrolling foliate motifs. This band is bordered by narrow registers of repeating floral patterns. The main body is decorated with a series of large circular medallions; one medallion depicts a couchant deer or gazelle within a floral ground, while others contain complex arabesque designs and stylised calligraphic scrolls. These medallions are connected by vertical, stylised chain-like borders punctuated by small floral bosses.
