§ John MILLER (1931-2002) Farmhouse in Botallack Watercolour, signed and inscribed, 13 x 20cm, 42 x 48cm framed. ProvenanceFrom the estate of Veronica Elliott, née Belloc Lowndes, granddaughter of the pioneering English novelist Marie Belloc Lowndes, prolific writer of some 70 works, her many crime novels uniquely focused on psychological motivation of crime. Her most famous work, The Lodger, about Jack the Ripper, was published in 1913 and subsequently made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock in 1927. One of the best-selling novelists of her day.Veronica was also the great granddaughter of the French painter Jean Hilaire Belloc, and her maternal great-great-great-grandfather was the scientist Joseph Priestley who discovered oxygen. Her great uncle was the well-known novelist and poet Hilaire Belloc.She married John Elliott, managing director of Tatler Magazine. They counted amongst their friends the Aga Khan and his wife Sarah (Begum Salimah Aga Khan) who Veronica was a debutante with, Princess Grace of Monaco, the Lucans, John Aspinall and numerous celebrities and socialites of swinging London in the 60s & 70s.
