Large S.P. Gerz German Historicism Polychrome Stoneware Pitcher. A large German stoneware pitcher or jug, attributed to S.P. Gerz and dating to the late 19th or early 20th century, executed in the Historicism or Neo-Renaissance style. The molded vessel features a tall, cylindrical neck, a bulbous midsection, a flared foot, and a prominent scrolling handle. The surface is extensively decorated in high relief using a palette of cream, dark cobalt blue, brown, and vibrant polychrome enamels. The decoration includes multiple figural genre scenes depicting socializing and courtship, set within arched panels around the neck and midsection. The lower body and foot are adorned with elaborate relief scrollwork and decorative motifs. The interior is glazed cream.
