A Large Historicist Polychrome Earthenware Ewer or Jug, Late 19th/Early 20th Century
A single historicist-style earthenware ewer or jug, characterized by a tall, tapered body set upon a flared base, and featuring a robust, ribbed handle. The vessel is extensively decorated with applied relief molding and multi-colored glazes applied over a deep cobalt blue background. The decoration is divided into registers. The upper and middle bands feature detailed green grapevine leaves and tendrils. The spout is formed by a molded human mask, likely depicting Bacchus or a Satyr, finished in a tan glaze. The large central band depicts a continuous, highly detailed, polychrome festive scene of numerous historical or peasant figures engaged in dance and celebration. The handle and molded trim elements are finished in off-white and beige tones.
