An 19thC American 10 bore side by side percussion muzzleloading black powder hammergun by J. E. Evans, Philadelphia. 30 3/4'' damascus barrels with signed concave rib, stamped under with serial number (453), maker's initials and 'ML' within an oval. Ramrod under. Straight-hand figured walnut stock with chequered palm and fore-end. The action, tang and trigger guard finely engraved with foliate scroll motifs, signed ' J. E. Evans. Phila.' James E. Evans is listed as a Philadelphia maker of 'percussion, duelling and derringer type pistols and fine double shotguns' at various Philadelphia addresses between 1850-1865.
