A PERSIAN ENGRAVED BRASS TALISMANIC PLAQUE WITH THE NAMES OF THE TWELVE IMAMS, 19TH CENTURY

This circular brass plaque or talismanic disc is constructed from cast brass with engraved calligraphic decoration. The front surface features inscriptions arranged in concentric zones, with the recessed areas filled with a black pigment inlay to provide visual contrast. The outermost band contains twelve circular medallions, each engraved with the name of one of the Twelve Imams of Shia Islam in Arabic script, including Muhammad, Ali, Hasan, and Husayn. The central circular field is filled with dense, interwoven calligraphy in naskh or thuluth script, likely containing pious invocations. An intermediate band features a decorative rope-twist border and additional script, with a separate cartouche positioned at the top. The reverse of the disc shows a rough, textured surface characteristic of the sand-casting process and features an integral raised vertical handle for gripping.
