1818 (July 4) Entire letter from London to Bermuda "p. Packet" prepaid 2/2 with a red Paid c.d.s., "4" delivery charge shown on the upper left corner. The Colony's official postal service (with Post Offices at St. Georges and Hamilton) was established by an Act of the House of Assembly in 1812, but the Post Office Act expired in 1817 and was not renewed until 1818. During this 'lapsed' period Charles Beach, publisher of the Bermuda Gazette, carried on an unofficial mail service, which delivered letters at a rate of 4d. Minor edge faults and tiny hole in address panel, otherwise fine and attractive and a rare example of the "Beach" 4d delivery charge shown on a letter. Photo on Page 6.
