S.S "Leinster" - H&K Packet / Ireland. 1918 Water damaged cover form Ireland to Lancashire, the stamp washed off, handstamped violet boxed "SALVED FROM / S.S "LEINSTER"", with Ashton-Under-Lyne arrival datestamp (Oct 27). The H&K Packet Steamer "Leinster" was torpedoed en route from Kingstown to Holyhead on October 10th and sank with the loss of 480 lives; at least one bag of mail was washed ashore on the Isle of Man. Very few covers are recorded from this wreck (some of which do not bear this rare named cachet). Photo on Page 30.
