Outstanding and almost certainly unique 1955 C.B.E. neck badge (Civil), WW1 Military Cross, BWM, Victory Medal, 1937 Coronation Medal, GRI Efficiency Decoration Nigeria bar and Jordanian Order of Istiqlal, 2nd Class neck badge and breast star (with lapel rosette in Arthus Bertrand Case of issue) to Lieut W.J.M. Cheesman (MC & Coronation un-named as issued, ED engraved to Capt Walter J.W. Cheeseman, M.C. Nigeria Regt Supp Reserve) Jordan awards with enamel damage to centres, CBE mint in case of issue, middle 5 swing mounted as worn, very fine and better. He served with Nott & Derby, M.G.C., West Africa Regt and Tank Corps.
Walter Jesse Wharton (sometimes spelt Warden) Cheesman's MC was announced in the London Gazette dated 18th July 1917 as Notts & Derby Regt attached to M.G.C. "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When advancing with his machine guns, he was wounded in the face, but led his team, through a heavy enemy barrage, and put his guns into position before compelled by weakness to retire. His bravery greatly impressed his men." His CBE was announced in the London Gazette dated 1st January 1955 lately Co-operative Adviser, Development Division, British Middle East Office, Beirut.
With Foreign Office letter (1959) confirming receipt of the award conferred by the King of Jordan in recognition of his services as Food & Agriculture Organisation Adviser on Agricultural Co-operatives in Jordan, but no permission to wear the award.
Comes with an incredible and comprehensive personal archive relating to his awards, service and his time in the trenches during the First World War. These include a photograph album containing 115 photographs, mostly in uniform a large number of these taken in the trenches and annotated with names of individuals. Loose photographs, calling cards and postcards of the First World War period, mostly un-sent.
Diary kept by the recipient from Sept 11th 1916 to December 3rd, inscribed 2nd Lt W J W Cheesman 15 M G Coy, 5th Division. Programme for a reception at Palais d’Abdine, Egypt 27th December 1950 (2 copies), together with invitation to Monsieur et Madam W J W Cheeseman. Instructions from the Private Secretary (M W V Maude) for attending the reception, programme for and event at the Palais d’Abdine, Egypt 9th May 1951 (2 copies), Christmas Card from The British Legation, Amman signed Sir Alex and Lady Kirkbride. A file of family related birth, death and marriage certificates and wills. A leather tooled photo album. The inside cover with a plate stating “ The Jordanian Co-Operative Central Union has the hour to present this album, which contains a collection of photographs in memory of the inauguration of the above Union on Febr 7th, 1959 to Mr W.J.W.Cheesman F.A.O. Expert of Agricultural Credit and Co-operatives, in recognition of his valuable services and advice in the establishment of the Union and the development of the co-operative movement in Jordan. This signed by the manager and secretary. Includes a portrait of King Hussein signed “with our platitude and very best wishes”. Statutes of the Order of The British Empire together with press cuttings, photographs and a letter of congratulations on his award of the CBE. Identity cards and passports for Mrs Cheeseman. Small photograph album belonging to Mrs Cheeseman, some pictures annotated and cover the WW1 period. Army book 152 – Field Service Correspondence book. Runs from 20/101916 to 12th May 1917. All appear to be Tactical Progress Reports. Typed service Summary showing CBE 1956 and Istiqlal 1967. Also states 1925-1944 R.A.R.O. Annual training with W.A.F.F. Awarded ED. Commanded Local Volunteer Defence Force 1940-1944. File of documents containing Walter Cheeseman’s
birth certificate, school report, letter of reference for the Colonial Service, Cambridge University certificate of Education, Officer Training Corps certificate dated 1913, Warrant appointing Cheeseman 2nd Lieutenant, memo from Adjutant RMAS appointing him to 3rd Bn Notts & Derby, 13th July 1915, note from Brigade Major dated 26th September 1916 passing on Brigadier Generals desire to express gratitude for the magnificent manner in which the captured their objectives Monday Last, hand written notes on aircraft identification of the Allies, original diagrams on the construction of a Travese Shelter. Photograph as MGC Officer at Buckingham Palace. Several original orders and operational and intelligence summaries, 1916 15th MGC Christmas Card, hand written inventory of Cheeseman’s kit when wounded, several original handwritten orders, original newspaper cuttings regarding MC and wounds, letter for investiture 15th March 1919, Certificate to Captain Walter Jesse Wharton Cheeseman for the 1937 Coronation Medal, letters of reference for the Colonial Office, Card Refugee from Holland or Belgium dated 3rd June 1940 showing him as a Civil Servant, letter signed by Anthony Eden informing him of the CBE along with press cuttings, Jordanian identity card, War Office letter dated 11th October 1946 releasing Captain W J W Cheeseman from service Royal Tank Regiment. London Gazette notice Oct 2nd 1923 announcing Cheeseman’s retirement from the Royal Tank Corps. Also many letters of congratulations on the award of the CBE, death certificate, obituaries and will. Large folder containing portrait photograph in Diplomatic uniform, Warrant for the CBE, Order for new gun positions addressed to 2/Lt Cheeseman February 1916, a number of original maps WW1 Trench maps etc some annotated, several group photographs, one autographed etc. Ex Warwick & warwick 12/3/2003.
