Fleece Press. ‘SPITSTICKS & MULTIPLES The History of the Society of Wood Engravers: 1920-46.’ A Limited Edition published by The Fleece Press in 2022. Splendid copies of the 2 volume set. First Editions. From a total edition of 475 copies, being one of 335 standard copies. Colour frontispieces, colour and black-and-white plates and illustrations throughout, some tipped-in. Two volumes. Large 4to. This huge and extraordinarily compendious work is described by Simon Lawrence, the author and publisher, as "without any doubt the most complex and challenging book that the Press has published. Also the most satisfying." Blue quarter cloth, patterned boards, spines with printed labels. 638 pages. Includes text amounting to a quarter of a million words with a huge quantity of work produced by the members during the first 20 or so years of the Society. Biographies of almost every one of the 342 exhibiting engravers will be published for the first time, alongside the transcribed minute books of the Society, surviving correspondence, press cuttings, private view invitations, posters, and the entire list of exhibited prints. A useful overview of these early Society of Wood Engravers days is provided in an Introduction by Joanna Selborne. Fine 4to copies. (2)
