A CANDAHAR, GHUZNEE CABUL MEDAL 1843 TO A FATALITY WITH THE 40TH REGIMENT OF FOOT (2ND SOMERSETSHIRE). A Candahar, Ghuznee Cabul medal 1842 named to Colr Serjt John Filgate H.M. 40th Regt, on steel clip and straight suspension. John Filgate was born in County Louth in Ireland c.1815. He enlisted with the 40th Foot on the 3rd August 1834 with number 798. Spending most of his career in India he rose to the rank of Color Sergeant in February 1842. Filgate is recorded as being admitted to the Regimental Hospital at Meerut in May 1943, dying there on the 30th August 1843. 1,400 medals with this reverse were issued to European recipients, 669 of which were awarded to the 40th Foot, with the 41st, the only two British Line Regiments to be awarded this medal.
Slight edge nicks, a scarce medal in nice condition.
