A PUNJAB MEDAL 1848-49 WITH CHILIANWALA CLASP TO A FATALITY WITH THE 24TH FOOT. A Punjab medal with Chilianwala clasp named to J. Riddle 24th Foot. The roll for the 24th Foot includes 2780 Pte James Riddle 'killed at Chilianwala'. 1,060 Punjab medals with this clasp were awarded to the 24th Foot, on the 13th January 1849 at the battle the Regiment lost 255 officers and men. The men, newly arrived in India had difficulties in the jungle when they were ordered to charge using only bayonets. They made good progress but suffered heavy casualties when charging head on at Sikh guns. The names of the fatalities are recorded on an obelisk outside the Royal Hospital in Chelsea. The battle between the armies of the British East India Company and the Sikh Empire as part of the Second Anglo Sikh Wars. Chilianwala was one of three clasps to this medal, battles which resulted in the annexation of the Punjab.
