A De Havilland DH 4 section of an aircraft propeller. H.C. Cleaver Ltd wooden propeller mounted on a stand, height 140cm.complete with brass inscription 'This section of propeller was salvagedfrom the wreckage of a DH4 De Haviiland Bomber on13th June 1918, Cologne, Germany.The pilot who died in action aged 23 Lt. Pilot William Ledge R.F.C'Provenance: What is known about Lt William LeggeFull name: William Legge Rank: Lieutenant, Royal Air Force (formerly RFC) Squadron: No. 55 Squadron Aircraft: De Havilland DH.4, serial number A7466 Mission: On a bombing raid to Treves (now Trier, Germany) Date of Loss: 13 June 1918 Circumstances:Over the target, the flight was attacked by enemy fighters. Legge was in a rear position, taking heavy damage. The aircraft was seen leaving formation "under control," but then pursued by two fighters, crashed in flames. Both pilot (Legge) and his observer, 2nd Lt Alexander McKenzie, were killed. Burial: He is buried in Cologne Southern Cemetery Age / Personal details: Approx 23 years old at death; son of William R. Legge and Annie Legge; lived in Leith, Edinburgh (address: 3, Fingzies Place).
