1915 Star Trio to 13702 Sjt A J Spurling Essex Regt. Killed In Action 26/9/1916 with the 10th Bn. Born Mile End Old Town, London. On the Thiepval Memorial. Killed when the 10th attacked at Thiepval, fighting on the eastern side of the village, occupying the Zollern Trench. He is mentioned in the battalion history 'On resuming the advance the Germans on the right flank, quite 800 strong, formed up en masse, but our LG Sergt (Spurling) opened fire and cut them down like corn'.
