OF CHARLES DICKENS INTEREST: A GOOD PEWTER QUART STRAIGHT-SIDED, DOME-LID AND ENGRAVED TANKARD, CIRCA 1720. The lid topped by an engraved Tudor Rose, the single narrow drum engraved with a bull, solid chairback thumbpiece, and S-scroll handle with hooded ball terminal, engraved to the underside with the initials 'E M' within a circular inscription (striked through) reading 'Sampson Turner at ye Bull, in Rochester', hallmarks to rim and touchmark inside base of William Eddon, London (PS), 18cm high

The Bull Hotel was originally built as a coaching inn in 1605. Charles Dickens who lived locally was a frequent visitor and The Bull is mentioned in both 'The Pickwick Papers' and 'Great Expectations'. It is presently called the 'Royal Victoria and Bull" after a visit by the future Queen in 1836.
