An 1826 document registering the birth of a slave, Cape Town, 1826, as the property of ''Mr Jan Hoels''. A male infant named Carel 3rd, born on the 21st April 1826, his mother named Lea, a housemaid aged about 23 years old, Slave Registry Office, Cape of Good Hope, Cape Town, signed by the Registrar, G.L. Rogers. Not a birth certificate, but the owner's registration of the child as his slave, having been born to one of his slaves. A sobering historical document.
