A PIERCED AND ENGRAVED BRASS PEDESTAL BOWL WITH COVER, LATE ZAND - EARLY QAJAR, 19TH CENTURY
The vessel consists of a globular body supported by a flaring trumpet-shaped pedestal foot and is topped with a conforming domed lid. The lid is decorated with intricate jali openwork featuring scrolling foliate arabesques and medallions depicting various animals, including elephants and deer. A turned bud-form finial surmounts the cover. The exterior of the bowl and the pedestal are decorated with multiple horizontal registers of hand-engraved figurative and zoomorphic scenes. These bands illustrate human figures in courtly or narrative poses alongside lions, gazelles, and elephants, all set against a ground of dense vegetal patterns.
