19th century, Watercolour, A mountain landscape in the Peloponnese region with a view of the Mega Spileo Monastery in Kalavryta, Helmos mountain with Greek priests and monks by a path. Signed with initials G. V. and dated 1872. Approx. 11 1/2" x 8 1/2"

This monastery was an important meeting place for Freedom Fighters during the Greek War of Independence of 1821 in conjunction with the near by monastery of Agia Lavra where the decision to resist and fight the Turks was taken, and the archbishop Paleon Patron Germanos blessed the War of Independence.
