ATTRIBUTED TO FRANZ XAVER BERGMANN (Austrian, 1861-1936), a cold-painted bronze depicting a male figure holding a lute-like instrument, wearing richly coloured garments, seated on decorative base. Signed to base 'GESCHUTZT', alongside 'B' within an amphora, signifying the Bergmann Foundry. This expressive piece is a fine example of the cold-painting technique. Dimensions: 15cm high approx. Condition as photographed. More about the artist: Bergmann is an important figure in 19th Century sculpture. Born in Austria, he inherited his father's foundry and went on to expand it. Initially producing bronzes using models designed by his father, he renewed his team of sculptors and began creating pieces in the Art Nouveau style. He then developed the technique of cold painting, also known as dust painting. The foundry's activity was interrupted during the Great Depression, and Franz Xavier's son reopened it for some time afterwards.
