AN INDIAN CHILANUM DAGGER, DECCAN OR SOUTHERN REGION, 16TH TO 17TH CENTURY
This Indian Chilanum dagger is attributed to the Deccan or Southern region, dating to approximately the 16th to 17th century. The blade is curved and double-edged, featuring a prominent, raised central longitudinal rib that runs from the base to the tip. The all-metal hilt follows the classic Chilanum form, characterized by a bifurcated pommel topped with a small, spherical finial. The crossguard is similarly bifurcated and recurved. A slender, curved knuckle guard extends from the forward quillon and terminates in a stylized zoomorphic head, likely representing a makara. The grip is waisted and features simple molded bands.
