Unique Islamic Scientific Instrument: Paperboard Astrolabe, Dated 1110 AH, Islamic Eastern
This rare Islamic paperboard astrolabe, dated 1110 Hijri is an exceptional example of the scientific ingenuity and artistic craftsmanship of the Islamic world. Unlike the more common brass instruments, this piece is made of durable, hand-painted and lacquered paperboard, making it both lightweight and highly portable.
The astrolabe is composed of eight finely crafted interchangeable discs (tympans), each calibrated for different latitudes, reflecting its use across various regions of the Islamic world.
The rete, with its delicately cut star pointers, demonstrates precision in astronomical design, allowing users to chart the positions of stars, determine prayer times, and orient themselves for Qibla direction. The presence of detailed inscriptions, calligraphic notations, and decorative flourishes highlight the harmony between science and art that characterized Islamic scientific instruments.
Surviving paper astrolabes are exceedingly scarce due to the fragility of the material, which makes this dated and complete example of particular importance for collectors and historians alike.
