A CHINESE CLOISONNE ENAMEL POMEGRANATE CIRCULAR BOX AND COVER
This Chinese circular covered box is constructed from a gilded base metal decorated with cloisonne enamel. The slightly domed lid features a fruiting and flowering pomegranate branch set against a vibrant turquoise blue ground. The design includes ripe pomegranates, some burst open to reveal seeds, alongside foliage in shades of green, yellow, and red. The cylindrical sides of both the lid and the base are decorated with a continuous scrolling floral and foliate band, likely representing lotus blossoms, on a matching turquoise ground. Both the interior of the box and the exterior base are finished with gilding. The construction involves the application of thin metal wires to create cells for colored vitreous pastes. While the design and color palette are reminiscent of Ming Dynasty prototypes, no maker marks or reign marks are present on the base or body of the item.
