A CHINA MEDAL AND FIRST WORLD WAR PAIR TO A CASUALTY ABOARD HMS HAMPSHIRE. A group of three comprising a China War Medal 1900 named to W. Gale A.B. H.M.S. Daphne, and Great War pair comprising War medal and victory Medal named to 183196 W. Gale A.B. R.N. With a collection of documents and photographs in uniform, including a similar image of his brother, also a casualty at Jutland. William Gale was born on the 9th October 1889, the son of George (J.G.) and Kate Gale of 19 Priory Lane, Bridport. A labourer, he enlisted at Portsmouth on the 9th October 1897 for twelve years. His service record confirms his posting to HMS Daphne between 10th October 1900 and December 1901. He was also entitled to a Messina Earthquake (Commemorative) Medal, 1908, at which time he was serving aboard HMS Excellent. He died on the 5th June 1916, a week after the Battle of Jutland, when serving aboard HMS Hampshire which was sunk by a mine off Northern Scotland. He is commemorated on the Naval Memorial in Portsmouth. At the time she was taking Lord Kitchener to Russia, there were only 12 survivors from the crew of 655. William was the oldest of seven, his brother Charles Albert Gale, born in 1881, died at the battle of Jutland aboard HMS Invincible on the 31st May 1916 when she was sunk with all but six of her 1032 strong crew. He is also recorded on the Plymouth memorial. He was married to Minnie Gale of 12 South Mill Lane Bridport.
