An Ottoman Islamic Illuminated Hajj Certificate Scroll, Dated 1277 AH / 1860–61 AD.
An illuminated Islamic Hajj certificate scroll executed in ink, gouache, and الذهب (gold) on paper, dated 1277 AH (1860–61 AD). The manuscript features richly coloured geometric and floral ornamentation surrounding panels of finely rendered Arabic calligraphy.
The upper sections contain devotional inscriptions and symbolic depictions associated with the pilgrimage to Mecca, including stylised representations of the Kaaba and sacred architectural motifs. Elaborate illuminated borders in blue, red, green, and gold frame the text throughout, displaying strong Ottoman decorative influence.
The lower section contains a detailed Arabic inscription recording the completion of the pilgrimage, with references to the holy sanctuaries and prayers for safe return. The manuscript is further enhanced with intricate floral arabesques and gilt detailing executed in a refined hand.
