Queen Anne. 1709 (April 23) Entire letter from the Queen at St. James, superbly written in a secretarial hand in French, signed in the Queens hand "Mon Frere, Votre bonne freur, Anne R", addressed to "Mon Frere Le Duc de Lorraine", hand carried. The reverse with a superb paper covered impressed seal of Queen Anne with her crown and royal coat of arms, recipients filing endorsement "La Reine d'angleterre du 23 avril 1709 au sujet de l'indemnite de Montferrat". The diplomatically worded letter thanks the Duke for his continued friendship and loyalty to the Grand Alliance, and for giving up his claims on Montferrat; she promises her support, and will only conclude a peace (to the War of the Spanish Succession) on terms satisfactory to the Duke, whose territories continue to form a barrier to the Empire. In 1708 the Duke of Lorraine (Leopold the Good) claimed the Duchy of Montferrat after his cousin, Charles III Gonzaga, was deposed; he agreed to accept the Duchy of Teschen instead after the Holy Roman Emperor promised Montferrat to the Duke of Savoy. A fine and scarce royal letter. Photo on Page 104.
