Modelled under full sail, the sails made of balsa wood
the case 40cm high, 59cm wide, 22cm deep
This wooden sailing ship was carved for Alexander Duncan (a member of the S. A. Air Force, stationed at Roberts Heights Army Camp) by an Italian POW, stationed at Zonderwater POW Camp, just outside Pretoria during the Second World War. Alexander Duncan,a guard at the camp, supplied the POW with the wood, including the balsa wood used for the sails (balsa wood was used for fixing mosquito aircraft at the airbase). The boat was named Lorna after Alexander Duncan's wife.
