£1,500 - £2,000
A FINE CHINESE PAINTED POTTERY FEMALE COURTIER, TANG DYNASTY. The lady wears a voluminous long-sleeved robe. Both forearms and hands are raised, her left hand remaining within the long sleeve whilst her right hand is exposed revealing her delicate small fingers. Note also the elaborate hairstyle, the facial features and the footwear protruding from the hem of her robe. It is made from a reddish-brown pottery and is relatively highly-fired. Height 35 cm (13.75 inches). Tang Dynasty AD 618 - 906. A fine example of its type. Bought from Brian Page Antiques in 2016 (with documentation).
There are minor firing fissures from manufacture to the base of the figure where the pottery is thick. Much of the surface is covered with a thin "calcified" deposit from its long burial and this has helped to preserved an unusually large amount of the original coloured pigments to the body that comprise mostly orange with green flower blossoms on top.
