R.M.S. TITANIC:
Decorative post-disaster commemorative anchor made by Titanic crewman survivor, faded script to reverse reads: “Constructed by AB Seaman William McCarthy, a survivor of the tragedy of the White Star liner TITANIC.” Via family descent in Cork. It is known that McCarthy survived in lifeboat 4, which he helped to crew. It left the port side of the Titanic at 1.55am and he would drag in several men from the sea, including a crewmate from Cork, William H. Lyons, who unfortunately died. McCarthy later told how he had worked Lyons’ body to try to restore life. McCarthy went back to sea after the disaster and attempted to volunteer for ship service at the outbreak of the Second World War, although well into retirement age. He was photographed post-disaster when returning home on the R.M.S. Adriatic.
