A Georgian gilt wood tipstaff for the town of Rye, East Sussex: the red and gold pained crown finial over shaft painted with Rye Town Crest on a gold reserve with 'GR' cipher above, black painted ribbed handle, 22cm long. *Notes- Rye is considered to have been an important port since the Roman period and has a long association with the sea. In the medieval period it was an important member of the Cinque Ports Confederation along with Hastings, Hythe, New Romney, Dover and Sandwich, formed because of their importance for military and trade purposes being at the narrowest part of the English Channel. The towns crest is made up in part of the Cinque Ports flag.
